Tucked into the lower level of a Midtown East building just off Third Avenue, Checkmate has been New York City's premier couples lifestyle club since opening its doors in 1995. Under the ownership of Venezuelan-American nightlife entrepreneur Danny C. since 2018 — who previously ran Le Trapeze NYC and has partnered with SNCTM New York and Les Chandelles Paris — the club bills itself as the velvet rope of lifestyle clubs in America. The space blends classic elegance with moody modern design, housing an LED and video dance floor, a live DJ, a foreplay lounge, cinema playrooms, a dark room, a neon blue-lit playroom, and mirrored open-play rooms with distinct musical ambiances in each. The crowd is prescreened by design: Checkmate targets fit, attractive couples and single women who dress to impress. Every applicant must submit a full-body photo with their membership application and be approved before receiving an invitation — the only key in the door. Thursday nights run 21:00-02:00 as a relaxed after-work party with reduced entry for members and free admission for single women; Fridays and Saturdays run 22:00-04:00 with full weekend energy and themed nights. Single men are categorically not admitted, ever. The club is BYOB — no alcohol is sold, but staff tag and serve your bottle from the attended bar with complimentary mixers. Towel and robe service, attended private lockers, and private security are standard on every night. The dress code is strict: suits and dress shirts for men; high heels and formal or sexy attire for women — no sneakers, t-shirts, shorts, hats, or sandals. Cellphones must be stowed in lockers at all times, keeping the atmosphere discreet and intimate.
