Checkmate NYC is one of Manhattan's longest-running lifestyle clubs — nearly three decades at 227 East 56th Street, a lower-level space in Midtown East that owner Danny C. (who previously ran Le Trapeze) has shaped into a velvet-rope experience since taking over in 2018. The venue features floor-to-ceiling mirrors, an LED and mirrored dance floor, a pole-dancing stage, plush lounge seating, and multiple themed playrooms — Cinema, Dark, Neon, Mirrored, private and open — where entry is in robes or nude only. Music runs Latin, hip-hop, and dance-pop through a live DJ. It's BYOB with a bartender on staff, complimentary mixers, and a robe-and-towel service included in admission. No alcohol is sold. The club is strictly couples and single women — single men are never admitted under any circumstances. Getting in requires an application with a full-body photo, G-rated headshot, and a description of your personality and interests; the club explicitly selects for "fit, young, attractive couples ages 23 to 40ish" and not everyone is approved. Once accepted, you still need an active membership and RSVP for every visit — no walk-ins. Thursday's After Work Party runs 9 pm to 2 am at a reduced rate, while Friday and Saturday go 10 pm to 4 am at $220 per couple. Single women enter free with approval. Dress code is non-negotiable: suits and ties for men, dresses and heels for women. No sneakers, t-shirts, shorts, hats, or flip-flops. Reviewers are polarised — Yelp sits at 3.5/5 with a split between five-star and one-star ratings, while Google averages 4.0/5 across 80 reviews. Fans praise the clean space, attractive crowd that delivers on the promise, friendly staff, and a dance floor more active than most lifestyle clubs. Critics call it overpriced, note that the smaller venue (roughly 20–50 couples on a given night) limits connections, and find the photo-vetting process elitist. Time Out described it as one of Midtown East's most exclusive haunts. A Miami expansion is planned for 2026. Phones must be put away at all times inside, and couples are required to arrive together and remain in the same room throughout the night.
