The Red Chair

The Red Chair (TRC) is a BDSM and alternative-lifestyle education, social, and advocacy organization serving Central Alabama, based in Birmingham. Founded in November 1997, it describes itself as Alabama's oldest organization of its kind and operates as a 501(c) nonprofit and Coalition Partner of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF). TRC welcomes all sexual orientations and consensual relationship styles, with a mission centered on education, discussion groups, and social events for the BDSM and kink community rather than nightly on-premise play parties. The organization is run by an elected Board of Directors and maintains a dedicated Consent Team, established in 2019, to field concerns and recommend membership action when needed. TRC operated its own roughly 3,500-square-foot clubhouse and dungeon from 2001 to 2005, giving it up after the landlord raised the rent sharply; since then it has held gatherings at rented spaces and members homes rather than a fixed public address. Members in good standing can privately book TRC's current playspace for parties or play sessions, with a Manager on Duty required on-site to oversee any dungeon activity. A long-running subgroup, ALAFF, runs a low-key newcomer-friendly social a couple of times a month. Membership is by invitation: prospective members attend a public munch, open to anyone 19 or older, and complete an orientation before being invited to private, members-only events. Private space rentals cost $200 for a four-hour block, with a fifth hour split between setup and cleanup, and can be canceled up to 48 hours ahead for a full refund. A house safeword, Red, lets attendees end a scene at any time, with dungeon monitors and the Manager on Duty responsible for enforcing it.
