On-Premise Club
Updated Sep 12, 2026
The Couples Club, which occupied Levels 2 and 3 of a commercial building at 226 Commonwealth Street in Surry Hills, is now permanently closed; Foursquare carries an explicit Now Closed designation and the Cylex-Australia directory independently confirms the closure. The venue had operated as one of Sydney's longest-running lifestyle establishments, trading under the billing of Australia's original and most famous swingers club since the early 1990s and accumulating an estimated 100,000 or more visitor couples over roughly three decades. It drew wider public attention when ABC Radio National's Street Stories programme broadcast a documentary feature about the club, in which the presenter reported finding the clientele frighteningly normal — open, friendly, and indistinguishable from anyone you might encounter on the street. The building's two floors served distinct social functions. The upper level operated as a conventional nightclub-style space: a full-service bar with lounge seating, a pool room, and an outdoor courtyard gave arriving guests a relaxed social setting before they chose to venture further. The lower floor — marketed internally as the Fantasy Level — contained the play spaces: two large open rooms each capable of holding more than twenty people, four smaller private rooms for which a refundable key deposit was collected at the door, a communal spa accommodating up to 25 people, and a dedicated bondage area. Clientele typically spanned the 20s to 50s age range, with Friday and Saturday nights drawing roughly 20 to 30 couples per session.
